About me –

“In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn.” – Phil Collins

It is a quote that my academic life has continuously proven truthful. I suppose it demonstrates the Yin and Yang within the world of education; teacher and student at complete opposite sides of the table yet, with the right willingness and determination, striking a perfect balance where each draws something unique and valuable from the experience with the other. I find this understanding has made facing the challenges of tutoring an individual easier to embrace as I see it as an opportunity to learn and grow from my student as they do the same with me.

WHAT DOES TUTORING MEAN TO ME?

For me, tutoring does not imply simply being ‘taught’ a lesson but it requires the student to work alongside me, making a real effort to not only ‘learn’ but to understand and connect new and difficult concepts/ideas we encounter. It is much easier to lose a lesson learnt relying only on memory rather than one that the brain has fully taken a hold of and understands. There are also instances where repetition is key and that means, practice… practice… practice! Because of these things, as a tutor I am always happy to find a student who is willing to give me that extra effort but for those students who may be less motivated, the support/backing of the parental body is extremely important.

AT HOME TUTORING DIFFICULTIES?

One of the greatest difficulties I have found with at home private tutoring is the familiarity of the environment for the child. While this can be a good thing in some cases, it can also be negative as well where the child may constantly break their concentration for small things like a constant need for refreshments or distracting themselves with a passing family member or friend. For this, I have found that ensuring the child has refreshed themselves as much as possible before the beginning of class and using a quiet place away from the rest of the family members works the best, it sometimes even makes the child more comfortable to express themselves.

WHERE WILL I TUTOR?

I do not work inside the family home. I honestly try my best to use outside sitting areas as much as possible.

CONCERNS!

I really appreciate hearing the concerns of the parent and what they would like to see focused on during the sessions but more importantly what the child feels they are uncomfortable with concerning any particular topic.

HOME-WORK AND TUTORING!

I’m willing to help with home-work! I understand the time limits a child may have, especially having to balance tutoring with home-work assignments. As such, if it is more convenient for parent and child I am willing to complete home-work RELEVANT to the subject(s) contracted to tutor before proceeding with
